1. Overview
Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) Applied Chemistry Research Institute was established in March 1990. At that time the Institute consisted of a single individual, with laboratory space of 20 m2 and fixed assets of less than 1000 RMB (120 USD).
Over the past ten years or more the Institute has developed very rapidly:
Long-term core research interests focus on Intercalation-assembly of functional inorganic materials, novel catalytic materials especially environmentally friendly catalysts, synthesis of mesoscopic materials, bioinorganic hybrid materials with pharmaceutical applications, optoelectronic and magnetic materials, electron transfer in host-guest materials, the effects of constrained environments on synthetic processes and fabrication of inorganic functional films and membranes.
There are over 20 permanent staff, including a core research team all holding Ph.D. degrees, and over 100 research students.
The research programs use state of the art techniques and methodology to tackle major problems of concern to the domestic chemical industry and have led to more than 100 Chinese patent applications, of which over 30 have been granted to date, and more than 30 international patent applications.
In fundamental and basic applied research, over 40 grants have been obtained from the State Key Basic Research (973) Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Beijing Municipality Natural Science Foundation and the Sinopec Corporation Research Program resulting in over 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals, giving the Institute a high profile, both nationally and internationally.
The Institute places a strong emphasis on developing commercial applications based on fundamental research carried out in the laboratory and more than 30 major grants have been obtained from the Ministry of Science and Technology under the Key Science and Technology Program, State High Technology Development (863) Program and the Innovation Foundation Program, from the State Economic and Trade Commission under the New Technology Program, from the State Planning Commission under the Commercialization of High-Technology New Materials Engineering Program, from the Ministry of Defense under the Key Science and Engineering Program and from the Beijing Municipality Key Scientific Research Program which have resulted in the successful transfer of technology developed in the Institute to more than 20 industrial plants in China.
The Institute attaches considerable importance to international collaboration and joint research projects have been established with research laboratories in the U.K., France, Germany, Japan and Australia. One Research Scientist from the U.K. has worked in the laboratory since 1996 and has been awarded  an ‘International scientific and Technological Cooperation Award’ and a ‘Friendship Prize’ by the State. Every year the Institute invites many overseas scholars to visit in order to facilitate exchange of information and members of the research team have visited laboratories in U.K., Australia, Japan, Canada, France, South Korea and Russia. From 2001 onwards, several Ph.D. students have been jointly supervised by the staff of the Institute and a French partner.
The research of the Institute has received external recognition as shown by the award of one National Scientific and Technological Innovation Prize (Second Class), one National Scientific and Technological Progress Prize (Second Class) as well as prizes at ministerial and provincial level for Scientific and Technological Progress (First Class) (two), Scientific and Technological Innovation (Second Class) (one), Scientific and Technological Progress (Second Class) (one), Scientific and Technological Innovation (Third Class) (one) and Scientific and Technological Progress (Third Class) (two).
In 2004,the laboratory was selected to join the “Changjiang Scholars and     Innovative Research Team Development Program” of the Ministry of Education.
In 2004, the laboratory began to participate in a ‘Network of Excellence’ funded  under the EU 6th Framework Program.
In 2006, the laboratory was selected to participate in the establishment of new a State Key Laboratory.
The laboratory area of the Institute currently exceeds 1500 m2 and the fixed assets total some 10 million RMB (approximately 1.2 million USD).
